I am sure most of us have seen Red Corner, an American film starring Richard Gere and Bai Ling. It tells the story of an American businessman named Jack Moore (Richard Gere) working in China who ends up on trial for murder and gets jailed in Beijing (even though the film was actually shot in LA). Mr Moore’s defence is in the hands of ShenYuliean (Bai Ling), a Chinese female lawyer who will eventually prove his innocence.
Going beyond the aspects of conspiracy and corruption of the Chinese government administration that the film wants to inform about – and for it actually receiving very bad reviews and being banned in China – Red Corner is a good reference to talk about court interpreting services and shines a light on this issue.
Mr Moore gets jailed for a murder he did not commit. He is surrounded by people speaking in Chinese, so a court interpreter is his only chance to explain his version of events.

Court interpreters are vital for any trial that sees foreign people involved. They are the link between the accused one and the court. Without them there could be no fair trial.
A Court interpreter plays an essential role in any trial like the one above and their work should be praised and constantly encouraged through adequate professional development.
Why are we discussing court interpreters? Because Applied Language Solutions has been handed an £18 million contract by the Ministry of Justice to provide court interpreting services exclusively in England and Wales.
The result? About 1000 interpreters did not show up because of the reduced pay and many trials had to be postponed causing extra unnecessary expenses.
In addition to the lack of funding for court interpreters, ALS has also been accused of providing unqualified interpreters who turned out to have a poor command of the language and a very low knowledge of court protocol.
The dispute is obviously critical to the UK legal system. We all understand the need for court interpreters even more considering the words of Geoffrey Buckingam, chairman of the Association for Police and Court Interpreters, who claims the need for translation services averages two cases a day at over 300 magistrates’ courts.
Hopefully the ALS will change soon the poor conditions qualified interpreters have been forced to work under, and invest more in the training of new ones they hope to provide. The demand for interpreters is obviously very high and it’s counterproductive to cut funds, especially if we want any trial to be efficient, equal and as quick as possible.
