Different Interpreting Services

There are a lot of interpreting agencies that offer various services which are all useful in their own way. However, the interpreting services offered usually vary depending on the needs of the clients. Clients’ requirements usually range from interpreting a conference to a business meeting. Whichever it is, there are qualified interpreters that fit the setting wherein interpretation is needed.

There are different modes of interpreting services. First is simultaneous interpreting in which the interpreter is usually behind-the-scenes. So this mode is often called as the most impersonal way of interpreting because the interpreter cannot be seen. The interpreter is basically inside a booth or a room while wearing a pair of headphones and talking in a microphone. This type is useful for a conference with a big-scale audience. Another mode is whispered simultaneous interpreting also called chuchotage which is the French term for whispering. This type of interpreting is designed to cater to a very small group consisting of 4 or less people wherein the interpreter restates what is being said to them in a whisper to avoid disrupting the conference or meeting.

Next one is consecutive interpreting wherein the interpreter is positioned beside the speaker and would interpret in sections afterwards. While the speaker is talking, the interpreter may take notes until the speaker stops. The interpreter would then reiterate and reproduce the message conveyed by the speaker to the target audience in a precise manner. This type of interpreting can be used for different settings but it is often used in small to medium sized events. However, it is also appropriate to incorporate it in a bigger event with the use of microphones and speakers.

On the other hand, there are also two forms of interpreting services under consecutive interpreting. The first one being telephone interpreting wherein it is done through a three-way telephone call or like a conference telephone call. What the interpreter does in this kind of interpretation is taking down notes throughout the duration of the telephone call and once all has been said, the interpreter will then reiterate what was discussed. This type is beneficial to those living in far places especially those clients or interpreters not living in the same state or country because one can simply be anywhere in the planet but still be able to interpret. The last and another form of consecutive interpreting is liaison interpreting which is usually described as the most informal type of interpreting. Its approach is more personal compared to the other types because it is usually conducted during one-on-one interviews and in a small group or meeting.
