The 6th Most Widely Used Language

Introduction
The Portuguese language is part of the Romance languages. The romance languages are all languages which were derived from the Latin language. The Romance languages have over 800 million speakers today. There is much difficulty in understanding the Romance languages because of the sheer number of different dialects and variety that they have. The Portuguese language is one such example.
It is the official language of seven countries which span a total of four continents. There are multiple differences between the Portuguese language that these countries use and they have adopted their own native dialects and have since mixed them with the original Portuguese language. An example of this would be Brazilian Portuguese.

The Vastness of the Portuguese Language
Today, the Portuguese language is ranked as the 6th most widely used language in the world. It is ranked 3rd in the western hemisphere and 1st in the southern hemisphere. It has over 236 million speakers, most of them found in Brazil. The Portuguese language evolved from the Old Portuguese language. The eventual spread of the Portuguese language was the result of Portugal’s quest for land. Before the Treaty of Tordesillas was established, the countries Spain and Portugal were at odds in conquering many parts of Europe and America.

While the Spaniards mostly take to the seas in conquering the “new world”, Portugal made its move by taking advantage of Europe’s close lands to conquer nearby countries. This resulted to the conquest of some countries found in South Africa. Eventually, the Treaty of Tordesillas ruled out the senseless quest in favour of equally dividing the lands outside of Europe between Portugal and Spain. Portuguese interpreting has lead to discovery from Portuguese books found in the countries which once belonged to Portugal giving great insight to their previous civilization.

Portuguese Interpreting of Dialect and Vocabulary
The vastness of the Portuguese language also takes into account the various dialects that the native people have used with the Portuguese language. It should be noted that the Portuguese language is one of the languages with the most borrowed words from different languages. Also, because of the evolution of the Portuguese language, many dialects have come up with different words which only have one meaning.
The many conquerors of Portuguese land also contributed to the difference in the language. Every conqueror has mixed their own native language with the Portuguese language accounting for the different dialects. Portuguese interpreting services has paved the way to understanding these multiple dialects. Some of the dialects are still mostly untranslatable but the future hopes that interpreters may come from these dialects which would greatly improve the communication that we may have with them.
