Introduction

The Ottoman Empire, which is also known as the Turkish Empire, has been believed to be the greatest empire and the longest reign of all known empires in the history of the world. This empire stretches from the southern reaches of the Holy Roman Empire to the far edges of Vienna to the north. Its southern borders contain Yemen and Eritrea whilst its western border is Algeria and its eastern border being Azerbaijan.

From these facts, one can only imagine the vastness of the Ottoman Empire especially during its time. The Ottoman Empire was so vast that a number of different cultures have gathered and have intertwined throughout the years. The Turkish language is one such culture. The Turkish language expanded as the Ottoman Empire expanded.

The Turkish Language Reform

When it comes to Turkish interpreting services are  major problem which occurred during the 1930s was due to the language reform imposed by the Turkish Language Association or TDK. The aim for this was to replace words which were borrowed from different languages, maintaining the original Turkish ‘lingo per say’. The result of this was the revival of old Turkish words and on the other hand the elimination of words from foreign languages. This caused quite a stir in the Turkish community because of the several new words that were being imposed. This caused s different reaction amongst both the older Turkish people as well as the young as both had different understanding of the words. There was no absolute understanding even in the government where texts had to be rewritten several times in native Turkish language. In these troubled times Turkish interpreting has played a great role in uniting the language and the people. Turkish interpreting services paved the way for better communication amongst the Turkic and have also played a great role in the scientific community by translating ancient texts from the old Turkish to the new one.
