Introduction
The
Ottoman Empire, also known as the Turkish Empire,
was believed to be the largest empire and the longest reign of all known
empires in the history of the world. Their empire stretches from the southern
reaches of the Holy Roman Empire to the far edges of Vienna to the north. Their southern borders
contain Yemen and Eritrea. Their
western border is Algeria
and their eastern border is Azerbaijan.
From these facts, one can only imagine the vastness of the Ottoman
Empire especially during its time. Their empire was so vast that a
number of different cultures have gathered and have intertwined throughout the
years. The Turkish language is one such culture. The Turkish language expanded
as the Ottoman Empire expanded.
Unlocking the Mysteries of the Ottoman Empire
Turkish interpreting has
leaded the way to understanding the various cultures within the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish language is only one of over
35 languages spoken by the Turkic people across a large area which spans part
of Europe and Asia. Because of the Ottoman Empire’s use of the Turkish language, it resulted
to the Turkish language being the most commonly spoken of all the Turkic
languages. The Turkish language is further divided into multiple dialects
depending on the area from which a certain dialect originated. This resulted to
difficulty with translating the Ottoman texts. A team which mostly consisted of
Turkish natives from different dialects were the key in unlocking the mysteries
of the Ottoman Empire. Their work was
substantial in figuring out what lead to the rise and demise of the Ottoman Empire.
The Turkish Language Reform
Turkish interpreting had a
major problem during the 1930s because of the language reform imposed by the
Turkish Language Association or TDK. Their aim was to replace words, which were
borrowed from different languages, with those of native Turkish. Old Turkish
words were revived and foreign words were removed from the language. This
caused quite a stir in the community because of the several new words that were
being imposed. The old people and the young people had a difference in their
understanding of the words. There was no absolute understanding even in the
government where texts had to be rewritten several times in native Turkish
language. Turkish interpreting services has
played a great role in these troubled times. They have paved the way to better
communication between the Turkic and have also played a great role in the
scientific community by translating ancient texts from the old Turkish to the
new one.
