How many times do
we watch the news and see a simultaneous interpreter at work? Many times I
guess. Interpreters are able to listen
to a speaker in another language and deliver a spoken translation of their
speech in a target language, in real time. They appear so natural and quick
that we wonder how they can effectively keep track of the speech they are
translating. Try to do it if you are confident with a foreign language, and you
will probably get lost after the second sentence! Have you ever noticed that a
simultaneous interpreter is always carrying a note pad? Obviously this is
because the interpreter needs to have all the main ideas and concepts he or she
needs to provide at a glance. It would be impossible to literally translate a speech in real time. Interpreting is about
re-expressing a speech in a different language.
Interpreting services
vary from the need for interpretation. They mainly divide into conference
interpreting services – commonly used by the European Commission and other
multilingual organisations – telephone interpreting services and audio
translation services.
Referring
to telephone and simultaneous interpreting, we can list all of the language
services provided by private and public organisations. Languages are strongly
relevant to health services, for instance. People are travelling and living
abroad and not everyone is able to speak the local language, and this is the
reason why an increasing number of hospitals and medical institutes provide an
interpreting service. An example is the NHS phone interpreter service that
provides assistance in ten different languages (Arabic, Bengali, Czech,
Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Slovak, Turkish
and Urdu).
A
sizeable amount of activity in any European institution or in embassies,
immigration offices and courts involve the use of interpreting services. Without interpreters there couldn’t be any
European conference or a fair trial involving a person who is not a native
speaker of the language of the court.
Moreover,
interpreting services have become
essential in international business relations. Negotiations, videoconferences
and meetings rely on interpreters to communicate effectively with their foreign
business partners.
Today
big companies rely on interpreters for establishing their contacts abroad, and
with the importance of commerce, they represent one of the major sources of
work for interpreters.
